The more unique something you are able to do is, the more likely it is to have a high value to the marketplace.
Naturally, if it is to have any value it must also be valuable to someone else.
What are unique skills?
These are the skills only you can do and therefore you cannot be compared to alternatives.
A unique skill can also come from combining multiple existing skills in order to create a very specific and niche skill when combined.
So, how can you find your unique skill?
Sit down and write all of your skills and abilities.
Then, determine if each skill is unique or not.
See if you can combine any of the skills to create a specific skill that matches what you want to do.
Example
- 3D Designer = Not Unique
- 3D Designer + Aesthetic Eye = Slightly Unique
- 3D Designer + Aesthetic Eye + Business Skills = Highly Unique
What could a person with these skills do?
Either they could create a 3D Design service business or tool, or they could join an existing one in a co-founding or managing position.
But if we took 3D Design only, plenty of others are able to do it and therefore it is not unique or valuable.
Each time you spend a lot of time performing low value skills that are common, you fail to live up to your potential.
But don't beat yourself up about what you could be, you will only become depressed - I will write an article about that soon.
Rather, reflect on how common your skills are and what you could do to make them more niche and unique.
And always keep in mind if the marketplace (companies, customers, etc), finds it valuable.
See you in the next one.
